As today is Memorial Day, the unofficial start of Summer and the season for travel, make sure that just because you are hoping on a plane, a boat, or in the car, you don’t leave your healthy lifestyle behind. Living fit and being bad ass means taking your good habits with you, even when taking a vacation from the everyday stresses of the world.
How does one be fit on vacation? Well, there are so many options, I don’t even know where to start. First, it depends on where you are going. We like to travel to the Caribbean once a year and that is where this series of posts will begin.
Travel Tip #1: Take Advantage of Classes
If you are like me and really love taking fitness classes, then you will be happy to know that many Caribbean resorts hire traveling fitness instructors to teach classes at their locations in exchange for deeply discounted rates. This, my friends, is a terrific thing. It means not only are you getting a highly experienced instructor (required for these travel fitness companies), but every workout is different. Classes range from beach walking to Zumba, to weight training and spin classes. How awesome is that?
When we went to the Dominican Republic last September, it was hot. Man, I mean it was H-O-T. That oppressive kind of heat that only exists in hell and on Caribbean islands. Therefore a terrific way to get exercise was in the pool. Water aerobics is an amazing way to not only cool off, but get a great low-impact workout, so there is no stress on your joints, and you don’t need to know how to swim. And afterward you can lay under a beach umbrella, sipping rum punch, and reading your favorite trashy magazines. Um, hello? Perfect vacation if you ask me.
Travel Tip #2: Go on Activity Excursions
If taking a class is not your thing – then you can try other ways to burn some calories, such as tennis, basketball, or beach volleyball. If you’d prefer to get off the resort, you can schedule a day trip, which may include hiking or kayaking. Both of these are great ways to see the local culture.
Travel Tip #3: Create Your Own Workout
Ok, so you don’t want to take classes and the idea of leaving the resort and straying into local life scares the bejesus out of you, how about creating your own beach workout.
If you venture out to the beach at sunrise, it will be empty (no glaring eyes) and you can take advantage of the early morning ocean breezes. Need some ideas? Below are 3 workouts you can do that will burn calories and build muscles, all in just 30 minutes.
The point of all this is for you to see that it is possible, even when traveling with family, to be able to fit your fitness routine in, as you would at home. You just have to be committed to it!
